POWAY -- The Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation is proud to announce an intimate evening of songs and stories with one of the '90s most beloved female singer/songwriters -- Paula Cole. Cole and her acoustic band come to Poway for one night only December 5th. Tickets are available at www.powayarts.org.
Known for her lush music and poetic lyrics, Paula Cole is an audience favorite whose live shows combine bare-boned intimacy with upbeat pop rhythms.
Many will know Cole for her 1996 album This Fire. The single "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" became an instant radio and MTV hit, reaching No. 8 on Billboard's pop chart. The follow-up single, "I Don't Want to Wait," was used as the theme song for TV's "Dawson's Creek" and became an international hit. "Feelin' Love," from the same album, was used on the soundtrack for the Meg Ryan-Nicholas Cage film "City of Angels."
In 1997 Cole won a Grammy for "Best New Artist" and was the first woman nominated for "Producer of the Year." Her performances as part of the 1997's Lilith Fair -- a tour of all-women-performers that included Sarah McLachlan, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Chapman and Jewel -- solidified her standing as one of the most celebrated female songwriters of the late 20th century.
In recent years, Cole has reinvented herself as a velvet-voiced chanteuse, delighting crowds with her intimate and passionate performances. Courage, her fourth album, was released on Decca in 2007 and continues Cole's tradition of presenting beautifully textured pop music.
Yet, despite how much audiences love hearing Cole sing the original versions of her hits, she is not, as Joni Mitchell once famously quipped about her own songs, a "human jukebox." Instead, when Cole performs, "... those songs will damn well reflect the personal changes she's undergone since first recording them." (PopMatters)
The evolution of Cole's life is clearly reflected in her writing which "...lays bare Cole's spiritual and personal trials from the past decade with an impressive candor. Emerging from the ashes are a warrior woman, a temptress, a poet, and an emancipated thinker." (PopMatters) But it is Cole's own lyrics: that best explains who she has become: "This mighty woman's ready to explode / Fire here below the surface of my volcano."
It is this unvarnished honesty and forthrightness that enables Cole to connect so viscerally with her devoted fans. Writes Joel Siegfried of Cole's performance at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, "Here is a performer whose persona is mesmerizing. I was so grateful for the incredible musical experience."
On December 5, 2009 at 8 pm, Paula Cloe, winner of the1997 Grammy for "Best New Artist", will mesmerize the audience at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts with another incredible musical experience.
